Roof damage can lead to extensive repairs if it’s not addressed early. If you have a leaky roof, it’s time to take action now! If the leak is so bad that you are catching drips in a bucket, it may just be a matter of time before things really get serious.
We’ve heard many stories of people arriving home from work to find carpets and floor coverings underwater in the middle of winter, and this is something you definitely want to prevent! Water stains on a ceiling, cracked wall or ceiling paint or peeling wall paper are all signs of leaks from inside the house.
The first step is to find the source of the leak. If you have plumbing running through your ceiling you’ll need to check for any leaks there first. Then look to your roof.
Inspect your roof tiles or sheets to determine if there’s any water damage. Are there water stains or pooled water anywhere? Look around any chimney breasts, around vents and pipes and valleys. If you have a tiled roof look for loose tiles, cracks in tiles or broken or missing tiles.
Are there gaps or signs of missing sealant? Are there badly deteriorated holes and gaps? Do you have vents that wiggle back and forth? Are vents they well attached? Are there missing screws attaching turbines? If nails are used, are they are properly attached?
If you notice widespread water damage, you need to open up your roof to take a look at the interior. Look for warping, mould, water marks and other signs of a leak, and replace any materials that have been damaged.
After you’ve treated the interior, you’ll need to address the exterior. If only a few spots are showing water damage, you can replace the tiles or metal sheets and then treat and coat them. If, however, you see more widespread problems, you’ll need to talk to get a professional assessment.
Choose peace of mind.
When selecting a roofing company, look for an established, qualified professional. Don’t be afraid to ask for references, and follow up with them. Ensure whoever you deal with has the appropriate insurance cover, and that they offer a guarantee on both their products and their workmanship.
